Ministry Report
CNazzy Women
The ladies have not only “met, set and et “ nearly each month, we have also traveled to Delta for a retreat, attended a conference or two, and shared silliness in general. We are continuing with “Secret Sisters,” where we pray for each other and bless each other with occasional gifties.
We are going deep into the word through the Bible Recap. Reading through the Bible in a year.
Future plans for this coming year, a trip to the Grand Canyon with a possible mission project. So if you are interested, talk with Melissa or Stephanie.
A.LO.F.T.
ALOFT (Adults LOoking to Fellowship Together), has “met, set, and et “ on a Sunday afternoon nearly each month this year. We have a good time just being together and sharing life. We’ve watched movies, played games such as corn hole and Bible Trivia Jeopardy, and ate some AMAZING food.

2025 Annual Church Meeting
Cortez Church of the Nazarene
Sun. Apr. 27, 2025
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
What a wonderful blessing it has been to serve and grow with you all through yet another year in
beautiful Southwest Colorado! My family and I cannot express what a wonderful blessing you all have been to
us, and if you heard my Easter Sunrise sermon, yes I do mean wonderful! Anytime we get to see Christ’s love
well up in the hearts of those around us, transforming all it touches, that really is a miracle to behold which fills
me with wonder and inspires me to worship our Creator and Redeemer all the more.
As associate pastor, I am so grateful to get to bring another annual report to you all of the great things
God has been doing in our Youth Group and our Community through the ministry of Cortez Church of the
Nazarene. And God has certainly been on the move! Last Spring, our teens began the church year with a retreat
at Mancos State Park where we learned about what it means to walk each day where Jesus leads, with Him by
our side. On Tuesday nights we gathered to pray for one another, worship together, and delve into the Scriptures
with themes such as our Advent “Change in the Waiting” and Dark Room Faith where we looked at some of the
challenging questions unique to teens in our culture today. We also looked at the ways God showed up to meet
people in the Bible in unexpected ways, and the ways He unexpectedly shows up in our lives as well.
This past winter, when we were unable to make it to Power Surge due to a severe blizzard across
Colorado, we took the opportunity to have a bit of fun and joined the Durango Nazarene teens in Farmington for
a day of roller skating, bowling, and jumping on trampolines! And as the cold weather settled into Southern
Colorado, our teens assembled Cold Weather Kits for the local homeless, and gave them to the fire department,
police department, EMT’s, Bridge Homeless Shelter, sheriff’s department, and CO State Patrol to distribute as
needed. Finally, we had a lot of fun celebrating birthdays at Dairy Queen as our teens got older, and hopefully
grew a little bit in wisdom too.
As an assigned Nazarene Chaplain and Support Services Director with Hospice of Montezuma, it was a
great privelege to get to walk alongside 80 members of our community as they approached end of life, where I
was blessed to get to work with and learn from a wonderful team as we provided additional free bereavement
counseling to over 130 members of the community. It was also an honor to officiate 11 funerals in this capacity,
many in close partnership with the honor guards of VFW Post 5231 and American Legion Ute Mountain Post
75. During this time, both Pastor JanElle and I served as volunteer Chaplains for Southwest Memorial Hospital;
and, lest my preaching chops get too rusty, I was grateful that local pastors entrusted me with providing pulpit
supply 12 times over the past year.
Finally, though I doubt I added very much to the conversation, it was a real blessing to be a “fly on the
wall” in meetings with the Montezuma Ministerial Alliance, the Salvation Army Advisory Board, and the
Advisory Board for The Gathering Place; with a view into how God is bringing Cortez Nazarene together with
other churches in the Montezuma Valley to more effectively reach and love our community through these
wonderful organizations.
As we pray and plan for 2025-2026 (including another Nazarene Youth Conference next year in Salt
Lake City), I am comforted to know that the Holy Spirit has His steady hand on the rudder, that He has gifted us
with wise leadership in Pastor JanElle and the Church Board, and that as long as we as a the Body of Christ pray
for tender hearts and remain sensitive to the ways God is calling us to share and live the Good News, we will
continue to see God do amazing things in the years ahead.
Trusting in His Unfathomable Mercy,

Cortez Church of the Nazarene
April 2025
To the Board and Congregation of Cortez Church of the Nazarene,
This last year (2024-25) I have had the pleasure of facilitating our Mamas & Littles group.
We have five ladies who are pretty regular and some who pop in occasionally. Our group meets on the first and third Thursdays each month. Along with the mamas are an array of beautiful little faces. The littles are attended to in the children’s wing by some awesome ladies (Mariynn Eastin, Kristi Light, Sharon Wobick, and Marilyn Madsen) while the mamas are enjoying a time of sharing and caring for one another in the fellowship hall. We laugh, share concerns, and talk about the best way to love, correct, potty train as well as what snacks are healthy and many other topics.
We hosted an event in November where moms could bring their questions to an Early Childhood specialist. This round table discussion provided insight into many topics discussed during regular meetings. We hosted another event yesterday - Make & Take Dinner Day. Moms cooked together, then each brought home four meals. This summer Mamas & Littles will meet once a month for various outings, then resume our regular schedule in the fall.
I am blessed to serve in this capacity.
Respectfully submitted,
Fay Kelly
Men’s Ministry 2025 Report
Our men’s meet on the first and third Saturdays for breakfast and prayer. Whether at McDonald’s, the Ute Cafe, the church, or at Mark’s House of Pancakes, these get-togethers are great fellowship and a source of encouragement.
During his time of leadership, Chase Light facilitated the No Regrets Men’s Conference in February. 15 men attended this telecast including men from a church in Dove Creek.
We are hoping to plan a fishing trip this summer.
Thank you.
Dear Church Family, 4-27-2025
Thank you for joining us today. Here is the annual report for Nazarene Discipleship International (NDI). There have been a lot of good things happening at our church in terms of discipleship.
Preschool Sunday School
Tracy Crawley has worked hard this past year to provide a safe, orderly environment for our preschoolers to learn and grow. She has taught bible lessons according to each season. It is a joy to watch our preschoolers blossom.
Children’s Sunday School
Kristi Light has been teaching the kiddos in the book of Acts for Children’s quizzing. All the kids did a great job and it was fun to learn with them. She is having the kids pick the subject for the next few weeks and they chose learning about the Armor of God.
Children’s Church
The Lights, the Hydes, and Ben & Cat have taken turns facilitating Children’s Church this past year. Last summer During Advent the children prepared a program for Christmas. Since Christmas, they have been working on a unit walking through various lessons from people in the bible.
Outreach to Families and Children
In addition to discipling the children in our church, we have endeavored to reach out to children and families in our community. To that end, we hosted our annual Trunk or Treat in the fall and Egg Hunt on Easter weekend. We also hosted a Drive-in Movie Day where kids made cars from boxes, participated in a devotion about going God’s way, then watched the movie, “Cars.”
Teen Sunday School
We appreciate Mel Bradley’s availability with our teens each Sunday morning. The teens have shared life while playing games and breaking doughnuts together. They have learned perseverance through Tenzi and remembered their bible knowledge with Bible Trivia. Plans to renovate the teen room are in the planning stages. Stay tuned for more.
Adult Sunday School
Chase Light began teaching adult Sunday School this past year with Mark Madsen covering as needed. Following the Faith Connections curriculum, up to 15 gathered each Sunday morning to study the bible and discuss its applications.
Home Bible Fellowship
A group of 5-9 gathered each week at the Madsens’ house for Bible study and fellowship. After studying 1 & 2 Thessalonians, the group began watching “The Chosen.”
Women in the Word
Marcia Hyde leads a group of 4 to 5 women meeting twice monthly to pray, read the Bible
together, and encourage each other. The women have been loosely following along similar scripture
passages as the Faith Connections series. We have enjoyed the fellowship and edifying one another by sharing our lives together and praying for our community & congregation.
Family Nights
This past fall we gathered for six Tuesday evenings for Family Night. We began with a shared dinner, then divided into various classes including the History of the Bible with Pastor Ian, Same Kind of Different as Me with Melissa Harris, Intro to Puppetry with Gil Harris, Bible Science with Pastor JanElle. During the spring lenten season our Family Nights began with dinner then a group for the teens and kids. The adults explored a new type of discipleship experience called Discipleship Bands.
VBS (Adventure Club)
In July we hosted a Christian Youth in Action team from Child Evangelism Fellowship. They conducted a 3 day Adventure Club for a few children from the community. We plan to have them return this year and we hope for a stronger turn out.
Teen Quizzing
We had 4 girls study the book of Luke this year. They have been top competitors all year. We will see what the championship this afternoon brings! Next year they will study 1 & 2 Corinthians.
I look forward to another year of watching God at work to grow each of us deeper in him.

Annual Pastor Report
Cortez Church of the Nazarene
27 April 2025
Dear Church Leadership and CNaz Family,
What a joy and honor to give my third report as your pastor. I am so thankful I have been able to adventure with you this past year as we together have seen God at work in and through the CNaz family. And “family” is what we are!
Sundays are a blessing as the family gathers to worship our risen Lord. Different music leaders - Mel Bradley, Karly Frazier, Mark Madsen, and The Flyaways - add variety week to week as we lift our voices together. Family Sundays continue to be a joy as we involve all generations in all parts of worship on the first Sundays of the month. Sharing the Lord’s Table together is always a highlight.
Our time in the word this past year has included walking through Exodus last summer, Hebrews in the fall, and following curricula from The Foundry for Advent and Lent. Between Advent and Lent, we explored a series derived from the vision our leadership board has established for the next four years - G.R.O.W.
G - Go to God first in everything
R - Reach out to others
O - Offer transformative connections
W - Work (worship) together
In Going to God First, we have set aside the first of each month as a Day of Prayer, as well as intentionally lifting up in prayer events that take place on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays.
We continue to focus on reaching out to others through our annual Trunk or Treat, VBS, and Mamas & Littles. This year we partnered with the Gathering Place to reach out to whomever walked through those doors. We also partnered with the Gathering Place to make our annual egg hunt more of a community event. We reached out to others by serving soup one Sunday in the park and writing encouragement notes to teachers at Kemper and first responders. A focus on reaching out to others has resulted in helping individuals find hope through rehab and/or relocation opportunities.
Offering transformative connections happens in men’s prayer breakfast, CNazzy Women, Madsens’ Home Bible Fellowship, Women in the Word, ALOFT, and most recently Discipleship Bands.
Working together? Plenty of opportunity for that as we continue to BE the body of Christ, serving both within and outside these four walls and it has been a blessing to watch the CNaz family rise to those many occasions.
Speaking of working together, our new fellowship courtyard, Jim’s Place, is a prime example of so many working together to see this vision become a reality. So thankful for God’s provision allowing us this great space to gather and bless those who use our building, particularly our scout groups as well as others.
Such a joy to welcome six new members into our congregation this past year and to baptize one. So thankful for all these dear ones who are willing to jump right in! Truly each is a blessed addition to the family.
The USA/Canada regional focus for the Church of the Nazarene this past year has been “Blessing Our Community.” I appreciate how we at CNaz have taken up that charge in earnest. The next focus is “Bringing People to Jesus.” And just imagine how exciting it will be when the next members who join our CNaz family l do so because they have come to Jesus for the first time!? So be it!
I am continuing my coursework toward ordination through Nazarene Bible College. I regularly collaborate with the Montezuma Ministerial Alliance and have served as a chaplain at Southwest Memorial Hospital.
Can’t wait to see what the LORD has for us in the coming months as we grow deeper and reach out further! May he lead each charge and be glorified as we follow hard after him.
His,
JanElle Hoffman
